Contaminants That Can Be Measured Using Air Quality Tests

If you suspect that the air in your home is less-than-safe, it is important to have it tested as soon as possible. A thorough air analysis can reveal the content of your breathing air so that unsafe situations can be corrected. Here are a few things that may be measured by an air quality test.

Mold

Mold spores can be particularly harmful to your family. Inhaling the spores can cause breathing problems, trigger allergies and asthma attacks, and cause general malady. 

Mold can grow quickly in dark, humid conditions, but the mold is not always readily visible. It could form within your HVAC vents, beneath your carpet, or even inside your walls. Once the spores become airborne, they pose a health threat, and mold remediation measures may be necessary to rid your home of the fungus. 

Air quality tests can confirm whether or not mold is present in the air of your home, so you can take appropriate measures to address the problem. 

Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide is odorless, tasteless, and colorless. Yet, it is also deadly.

Carbon monoxide is the gas that is associated with suicides and accidental deaths that occur when a car is left running in an enclosed area, such as a garage. However, carbon monoxide is released by more than just car exhausts.

Faulty heating units may release carbon monoxide gas into your home, but, because the gas has no smell, it can be harming your family without your knowledge.

Carbon monoxide is also released by fireplaces and gas stoves. An air test can confirm the presence of carbon monoxide and its concentration levels.

Particulates

If you or a family member has noticed an increase in allergy symptoms, the air within your home could be the culprit. Air can contain particulates, such as dust, pollen, and organic toxins, even if your home is clean. These particles can irritate the lungs and aggravate allergy symptoms. 

Once the presence of the offending allergens is confirmed, measures, such as the installation of different types of air filters in your vent, can be taken to lessen their concentration. You can test your air before and after preventive measures have been employed to confirm that the measures are working.
